Sometimes the best thing an artist can do for their creativity is step away from it.
I don’t get to take many vacations but when I do, I make it one of my goals to find inspiration. So for my road trip coming up this month…that’s exactly what I’ll be doing. Finding inspiration wherever I can…and hopefully painting a little.
The thing is…vacations offer a powerful reset, not just for your body, but for your imagination. When you leave your usual environment, you naturally break out of routines that can quietly limit your creativity. New surroundings introduce fresh colors, textures, sounds, and perspectives, all of which can subtly (or dramatically) influence your artistic voice.
Traveling also encourages observation. Whether it’s the way light hits a building in a different city, the patterns in nature, or even the rhythm of a new culture, these small moments can plant the seeds for future work. You may not even realize it at the time, but your mind is collecting inspiration everywhere you go.
Beyond external inspiration, vacations help internally too. Rest reduces burnout, and a relaxed mind is far more open to ideas. That “aha” moment often comes when you’re not actively chasing it…on a walk, at the beach, or while exploring somewhere new.
You don’t need a grand, faraway trip either. Even a short getaway or a change of scenery can refresh your perspective and reignite your creative spark.
In the end, taking a break isn’t stepping away from your art—it’s investing in it. So go ahead and book that trip 😉
Until next time…
