Yes, it’s almost holiday season time.
In just a few short weeks, many of us will be preparing turkeys, pies and all the fixings to celebrate Thanksgiving. Or maybe you’re ready to start early Christmas shopping.
Either way, the holidays are here.
Even so, life still goes on. And if you’re a creative hobbyist or a creative who has your own business, you still have to (and still want to) keep being creative. Some of us crave being able to make art. It’s like therapy. All the more reason to make sure we continue doing what we love during the busiest (and most chaotic) time of the year.
With that in mind, I’ll make this post fairly short and sweet. You need to stick to your guns and keep making your art.
Here are some tips to help you continue your artistic pursuits during this hectic time – keep this list handy:
- Plan Ahead: Schedule specific times for art in your calendar, just like you would for any other commitment. Having a set schedule can help ensure you make time for your creative pursuits.
- Set Realistic Goals: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to complete extensive art projects. Set achievable goals that fit within your available time. Even small, regular efforts can lead to significant progress.
- Create a Mobile Art Kit: Put together a portable art kit that you can easily carry with you. This could include a sketchbook, pencils, watercolors, or any other materials you prefer. This way, you can make art in spare moments, like while waiting in line or during breaks.
- Multitask Mindfully: You can incorporate art into your holiday preparations. Create custom holiday cards, design decorations, or paint ornaments. This way, you’re combining art with your holiday activities.
- Use Short Sessions: If you can’t find long stretches of time, use shorter periods effectively. Even 15-30 minutes can be enough to sketch, jot down ideas, or work on smaller projects.
- Find Inspiration in the Holidays: The festive season can be a great source of inspiration. Paint winter scenes, festive decorations, or capture the emotions and activities of the holiday season in your art.
- Take Breaks for Self-Care: Remember to take breaks for self-care, and art can be a form of self-care. It can help you relax and recharge during a hectic holiday season.
- Involve Others: Encourage family and friends to join you in art activities. It can be a fun way to bond and share creative experiences.
- Online Resources: Explore online art communities, courses, and challenges that align with your interests. They can provide motivation and structure.
- Set Realistic Expectations: It’s okay if you can’t create as much art as you’d like during the holidays. Be kind to yourself and understand that this season may be busier than usual.
- Reflect and Document: Use your art as a way to document your holiday experiences. Create visual journals or sketch your holiday memories. This can make your art more meaningful and serve as a personal keepsake.
- Prioritize What Matters Most: Sometimes, you may need to prioritize other commitments during the holidays. Art can wait if necessary, but don’t forget to return to it when things calm down.
Making art during the busy holiday season can be a rewarding and therapeutic way to express yourself, relieve stress, and create meaningful gifts for loved ones. The holidays are about joy and togetherness, so find a balance that works for you.
By integrating art into your holiday season in a manageable way, you can continue to create and enjoy your creative pursuits without feeling overwhelmed.
Until next time…
