I feel like I am writing this post to myself.
I can’t tell you how many times I have been in this situation…the one where I can’t seem to find direction. Confusion jumbles my mind; What art piece do I want to do next? Which Procreate brushset do I want to create this time? Should I be doing something else instead? I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
When this happens, we find ourselves all over the place, overwhelmed, frustrated…blocked. Yet, we don’t know why – and knowing is half the battle.
When you are in this situation, the root cause is always internal…but let’s investigate further.
First, confirm if the situation is being caused by any external factors in your life. Is there stress in the house? A family member sick? Are you getting a ton of interruptions so you can’t focus? Write a list down and address each one individually. Meditate on it to get your head in the best space. You may not be able to control every situation, but you can find ways on how to best manage it.
If your assessment finds that there is nothing external that could be attributing to your block, then look inward to see what the issue may be. I’ve listed some potential ones (with possible solutions) below:
- Anxiety: Try meditation to calm your mind
- Lack of Inspiration: Look for inspiration in books, art, nature, or even conversations with others. Sometimes, external stimuli can spark creativity.
- Burnout: Don’t be afraid to try new techniques, styles, or approaches. Experimentation can lead to breakthroughs.
- Distractions: A change of scenery or workspace can stimulate new ideas. Try working in a different location or rearranging your workspace.
- Lack of Confidence/Skill: Take an art or writing course. You’ll be surprised as to how much confidence you gain once you’ve learned a new skill.
- Overthinking: Sometimes, stepping away from your creative project for a while can help you recharge and gain a fresh perspective. Clear your mind so you can come back refreshed.
Remember that creative blocks are common, and they don’t last forever. Be patient with yourself, and don’t be afraid to seek support or advice if you need it. In fact, in addition to my blog posts here, I’ve also now been sharing quick video tips on my Instagram. Feel free to go check those out.
Ultimately, you’re the one who’s in control of your own mind. Look inward and reflect on what you’re feeling at the moment. Most times, it’s little lies that we tell ourselves (example: “I’m not good enough.”). Don’t allow yourself to fall into your own trap of insecurity.
Maybe the real issue is your mind is trying to go in one direction when your heart really wants to go in another.
Follow your heart…your creativity will follow.
Until next time…
